Weekly Update 2/19

Science
We started Diversity of Life this week with definitions of life and things that all life does. We will pick that up next week but will spend most of next week focused on the Science Fair. Projects should be close to completion by the end of day on next Monday. We will have all class on Monday to work on them and I am excited to see the results. Most students have worked very hard and have done some very interesting experiments and research.

The 5th Grade Science Fair is February 26th, from 1:30 to 3:00 in your students homeroom. Students will be presenting their material and getting a chance to look at others works in the three classes. For any information, please feel free to contact Mr. Hill at jdhill@seattleschools.org.

Social Studies, Mr. Hill's Class
We are continuing to look in depth into the Pocahontas story. Students have read extensively about her and watched a video about her role in saving Jamestown. They are currently in the middle of writing about who they think she was and how her story has been exaggerated and changed. I look forward to reading their work.

Weekly Update

Science
We finished F.L.A.S.H. this week with talking about pregnancy, HIV and AIDS. Throughout the unit we had some deep discussions about decision making and we ended the unit talking about ways to make decisions and be in control of our own lives. We start Diversity of Life next week and I am excited to brush of the microscopes and look at some interesting specimens.

We we also have one more Friday to finish our Science Fair projects. They are due February 25th and it would be a good idea to check in with your student to see how they are progressing.

Math
This week students worked on proportional relationships. They learned how to identify if two amounts were proportional based on both a table and a graph. Next week we will look at how to solve problems using proportional reasoning.

Weekly Update

Science
We are almost done with F.L.A.S.H. Having great conversation with the kids this week about the reproductive system and pregnancy, I really appreciated the seriousness that students gave these subjects. They are very intrigued with pregnancy and chromosomes and I know more than a few students will be going into cell biology. Friday will be spent working on science fair projects and students will have access to computers for printing material.

We will be winding up F.L.A.S.H next week with HIV and then move into Diversity of Life. I think most of the students will welcome the change but I am glad that we have taken the time with F.L.A.S.H.
