Book Fair

A spring book fair from Phinney Books is coming to Cascadia on Monday, May 6th! The book fair will run all day during school hours and continue until about 4 pm. All classes will have an opportunity to visit the book fair and students can purchase books at that time. Please remind students to bring money to school and keep it in a safe place. I would recommend not sending kids with large amounts of cash though. 20% of all sales will go back to Cascadia as store credit. We're thankful for our neighbors, partners and fellow readers at Phinney Books!

Students should bring in their costume pieces in a shopping bag with their name on it. Students should also make sure they wear dark socks with dress shoes. Girls wearing dresses from me may want to wear a tank top and leggings under their dresses. Also most folks wearing or borrowing an overshirt from me should bring a white tshirt to wear as an undershirt. The pieces that students provide should stay at school in their costume bags. And sandals should have a back-no flip-flops or slides, please.”

Thanks you and sincerely,

-Nathan

Beat the Bridge with Team Cascadia

Dear Cascadia Families and Friends,

The Public Service Committee would like to invite you to join us in participating in Beat the Bridge this year. The Nordstrom Beat the Bridge to Beat Diabetes is a fundraiser for JDRF — the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. The event consists of an 8K run and wheelchair race, a 3-mile walk, a 1-mile fun run, and the Diaper Derby for toddlers. The event is called Beat the Bridge because the course travels over Seattle’s University Bridge, which is raised during the race. Participants try to cross the bridge before it is raised. Those who don't beat the bridge must wait, with a live band and entertainment, for the bridge to come back down. After a few minutes, the bridge lowers and everyone can finish the race. Since the first Beat the Bridge race in 1983, Nordstrom has partnered with JDRF to raise funds to cure, prevent and better treat T1D. Beat the Bridge is part of the JDRF One Walk program, which holds annual charitable walks in more than 200 locations in 13 countries. JDRF One Walk has raised more than $1 billion for T1D research and we are proud to currently hold the number one position as the largest Walk in the country! We hope you will join us on May 19, 2019 for the 37th Annual Nordstrom Beat the Bridge to Beat Diabetes.

Public Service Committee hopes you can join us in supporting Diabetes research! To join, you can search for “Cascadia Elementary” and join Mr. Brown’s team! Alternatively, you may join as an individual, and it will prompt you to register your child on the 4th step. Lastly, you can start your own team, and do some fundraising. Please follow the link to sign up, https://www2.jdrf.org/site/TR?fr_id=7684&pg=entry, or just search, “beat the bridge.”

Hope to see you out there!

Sincerely,

-Mr. Brown and the Public Service Committee

4/3/19 Update

This week in the Brown hill classroom, we have started a new unit in Math. We have also worked very hard on Shakespeare. A lot of people have been on Vacation or very sick. Many people are chanting a weird chant at recess and we will start having to practice lunch AGAIN if the 4th graders keep on chanting. In instrumental, everyone has started to work together for everything to turn out well at the concert. The Clarinets, Flutes, Trumpets and Trombones are playing Mojo and Galant March. The String Ensemble are playing 4 songs, Jazz in D, Russian Music Box, Clog Dance, and Power Rock. The Chamber Ensemble is playing Valliant Knight and Plink, Plank, Plunk. I am just getting an update from our Current Events Reporter, Juliet. Juliet said that She interviewed Nurse Kari and found out that the most common reason that kids go to the nurse is because of Basketball head injuries. by Alden

Ahoy mates of the orcas and the fancy bananas, this week in math we have been doing algebraic expressions and two step equations. So, we have been doing the lessons 4-7, 4-8, 4-9, and 5-1.  In mathematics, an algebraic expression is an expression built up from integer constants, variables, and the algebraic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and exponentiation by an exponent that is a rational number). For example, 3x2− 2xy + c is an algebraic expression. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebraic_expression. Two step equations, Two-step Equations. As in one-step equations, the goal is to simplify the equation and isolate the variable on one side of the equation and numbers on the other side. Two-step equations, however, require more than one mathematical step to solve. An example of a two-step equation is 3x + 4 = 16. https://sciencing.com/do-step-equations-algebra-2-7962339.html
And in science we have been learning about Ecosystem restorations. An ecosystem restoration is - Ecological restoration is the process of reclaiming habitat and ecosystem functions by restoring the lands and waters on which plants and animals depend. Restoration is a corrective step that involves eliminating or modifying causes of ecological degradation and re-establishing the natural processes — like natural fires, floods, or predator-prey relationships — that sustain and renew ecosystems over time. https://www.biologicaldiversity.org/programs/public_lands/forests/ecosystem_restoration/index.html. And we have been doing worksheets, and we used the website http://www.landscope.org/washington/threats/.
So, that is what we have been doing in math and science in Mr. Brown and Hill’s class. It is really fun. by Jerald

Shakespeare has been fun. We have sung some fun songs like Sutfin safari, Good Vibrations, In My Room and California girl. The cast is Duke Orsino, Viola, Lady Olivia, Sir Toby Belch, Sir Andrew, The Clown/Feste, Sebastian, Antonio, Malvolio, Maria, The Captain, Fabian, Valentine, and the Soldier/Sailors/Spies. We have been practicing our blocking and memorizing our lines.  by Younis

Hello parents of room 275 and 274. In language arts, we have just finished up book clubs and have started doing poetry. Here is an example of good poetry by Shel Silverstein.
Smart
My dad gave me one dollar bill
'Cause I'm his smartest son,
And I swapped it for two shiny quarters
'Cause two is more than one!
And then I took the quarters
And traded them to Lou
For three dimes -- I guess he didn't know
That three is more than two!
Just then, along came old blind Bates
And just 'cause he can't see
He gave me four nickels for my three dimes,
And four is more than three!
And then I took the nickels to Hiram Coombs
Down at the seed-feed store,
And the fool gave me five pennies for them,
And five is more than four!
And then I went and showed my dad,
And he got red in the cheeks
And closed his eyes and shook his head --
Too proud of me to speak!
In social studies, we are talking about why the British went to America. We are also talking about religion.
