Field Trips

We finally have the amount that each student will be asked to pay for the three field trips this year. It is $275 per student. I am also excited to announce that the Seattle School District will take an online payment for it. They now have a link through the source for most payments.

This link is a FAQ for how to make payments once you are logged into the Source. https://www.seattleschools.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=627&pageId=58439596
I am sorry that the timing of this is so close to the holiday so feel free to wait until January to pay if it is inconvenient.  We also offer scholarships if this amount is difficult. You just have to email Laura at lremme@seattleschools.org.

Field Trips:
  • Living Computer Museum on January 11th and I have already sent out the permission slips. Please make sure it is returned ASAP!
  • The next one will be the Pacific Marine Research Vessel on March 21st. This one will have special instruction for transportation so keep a look out for those.
  • Camp Sealth will be June 4th through the 7th.

thank you so much for your support in making these happen.

Josh and Nathan

P.S. We are still in need of chaperones for the Living Computer Museum on January 11th. If you have your paperwork turned in and are ready to go, please let us know.

Red dates are corrections from the email that was sent out.

Weekly Update 12/19/18

This week has been a good one in the Brown/ Hill classroom. For math, we are learning about area and perimeter. In science we are working on our molecular models (due on the 21st). We are also doing a vlog about the book we are reading in class. (the True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle) On Friday, we will also have our holiday party.

In Charlotte Doyle we have been finishing up on our reading responses on part one. In part one Charlotte is a girl who lives on a ship. At first Charlotte liked the captain on the ship but then she realized what he was doing to the crew. Charlotte made good friends with the crew members and the captain wasn’t treating them respectfully. One day Charlotte found a pistol and she went to the captain and when she wanted to show the captain, the pistol was gone. Then the captain started killing the crew with guns and he was also whipping them and Charlotte didn’t like that so she whipped the captain. After that, the crew had to work full time because they had less members. Later Charlotte found out the pistol was part of their plan to get their revenge on the captain. Charlotte was sorry she messed up their plan so we will be writing or vloging a letter to the crew that we will write for Charlotte. The letter will be apologizing to the crew and will tell what Charlotte will do for the crew.

Weekly Update 12/12/18

In language arts, students are editing their novels and making cover pages. Students will be celebrating their writing and hard work on Friday. We are combing with all the other 5th grade classes, who have written poetry anthologies, and having a cozy afternoon of novel and poetry reading. We invite students to wear their pajamas, as well as bring in one stuffy that fits in their backpacks. Additionally, if any parents are able and willing to help out with crockpots, cider, and decorations, please email us!

They have also been reading Charlotte Doyle as a class and should be caught up through chapter 8.

In science this week, we are wrapping up the food science unit where we look at modeling things to small to see. The end of which is a molecular model that is due Friday the 21st. Students will also be writing a scientific explanation of how chromatography works. We made models of this as well and we used those models to describe how molecules could be separated using their properties.

In math this week, we looked at proportional relationships and how they look in equations (y=kx), how they look in tables (have a constant rate) and how they look on graphs (straight line and go through 0,0). Next week will be the chapter assessment on Thursday and we will be doing some review early next week.

Have a great week.
