Weekly Update 1/23/19

Hello Parents and guardians of the Fancy Bananas and Orcas,

This past week has been full of excitement. In math we continued percent's and proportions. On Friday the 18th and the 22nd we  had the privilege of having our student teacher give us a lesson.

In science we continued F.L.A.S.H. and started to get into Self-Esteem.

On Tuesday we had a substitute for Mr. Brown, his name was Mr. Clithero.

The next subject in art is black lives matter, social justice, and environmental safety. The art project is completely student lead. It's our choice Ms. Bush just grades.

Soon there might not be enough money to provide hot lunch if the government shutdown continues.  The food contracts are still good the owners who own the food company's and  will get paid later. So don't worry about our school running out of food. But try to bring lunch from home.

Salutations,
Porter G.

Charlotte Doyle
Well, readers, Mr. Brown and Mr. Hill’s classes have finally wrapped up the exciting tale of Miss Charlotte Doyle. Charlotte gets to Providence, Rhode Island, and greets her family. They find the journal, however, and agree to strike a deal: They all forget the sea voyage and she turns back into a delicate lady. Only then does Charlotte realize that her family does not understand or appreciate the new her. She sneaks out of the house by window (easy when you’ve climbed the royal yard!) and runs to the docks. She boards the Seahawk once more.
And that, friends, is the story of Charlotte Doyle.

In math this week we have been working on percent's and proportional reasoning. On Friday Mr. Kinser taught math and he did a very good job. We talked about converting percent to decimals and decimals to percent. We also did percent’s of something like what’s 60% of 350? We also had homework yesterday so make sure your child turns it in on Friday.

In science, FLASH continued. We began self-esteem. We learned the three steps of self-confidence 1. I belong. 2. I can do things 3. People appreciate me. We just started self-esteem yesterday because we did a lot of anonymous questions.

Weekly Update 1/16/18

Hello Parents and Guardians of rooms 274 and 275
by Porter G

These first weeks of 2019 have been full of excitement. On the 11th we got to visit the Living Computer Museum, there were lots of fun activities including, self driving car simulator, robots you can drive, an Atari, there were some new fangled Echo's and google home, and lots of old computers!

This week in math we started a unit on percent's and proportions. ON the 8th we started  F.L.A.S.H!!
In LA we continued Charlotte Doyle, and started grammar and we got Khan Academy account, which your child can tell you about.

In P.E. we started circus arts. Circus arts is useful because it works on health related fitness and skill related fitness, and it helps kids who don't like competitiveness on being on a team participate in a joy P.E.

At recess the field is rarely open because there is not enough volunteers and the PTA cant pay for any more paid monitors.

Grammar
By Abby
This week we used our new “Skills Practice books” to start learning grammar. The class’s finished lesson one on subjects and predicates. Now we are heading into lesson two. In lesson two it talks about complete sentences. Along the way we have discussed and debated about the meaning of the different words. We debated the differences between simple sentences and compound sentences. This is just the start of our grammar adventure!

Lately, as we approach the second half of the school year, we plunge deeper into the watery depths of the book The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. As Charlotte finds Zachariah in the brig, and the murderer of Mr. Hollybrass is lurking about, we are definitely immersed in the story of a young girl, a mean captain, and a ship called the Seahawk heading to Providence, New Hampshire.

Math and Science
By Porter N
Math: In math, we are doing percents and proportions. It’s like the last thing we did with percents, but reversed. Kind of. I'm just a blogger, don’t take my advice
Science: In science, we’re doing flash, but don’t worry. It's not going to be that awkward... (hopefully)

Weekly Update 1/11/19

LIBRARY
By Abby
This week in library we learned about Martin Luther King Jr. We learned about what he fought for and what life was like when he was a kid. We learned this from a video. The video started by telling us about his life as a kid. Then, it went on to how there were a lot of segregation. In the end we learned about all his speeches. After the video we wrote our own versions of his “I Have a Dream” speech. In ours we wrote about problems now, like homelessness. Our entire class learned new things about Martin Luther King Jr.
