Weekly Update

Dates to Remember
Curriculum night September 29th at 6:00 PM
Camp Sealth November 2nd through the 4th
 Camp Sealth
We have had a few people sign up to be chaperones and turn in the paperwork. Thank you for helping out. We are also starting to take money for Sealth and each child will be $125. Adults will be $100. If you need assistance with this, please contact Beth Lee at brlee@seattleschools.org.  Make checks payable to Cascadia Elementary. We also want to make sure kids are comfortable, so make sure you have warm dry clothing. If you have any extras and think you can pass them down to someone else in the class, feel free to send in any clean wet weather gear.
Mr. Hill’s Class
This week, Mr. Hill’s class spent some extra time getting to know their buddy classroom, Ms. Buchert’s class. We asked and answered questions about Cascadia and got to know a great 2nd grade class.
Mr. Hill has a blog that you can check for additional information and resources for both classes.
Schoolology
Here is a link to the district Student Portal. One of the links is Schoolology and has logins for both students and parents. I use this for my grade book, for assignments and other communications. This link is information on logging in and I will be teaching students how to log in, in the first few weeks. It is good for students to get used to checking grades and looking at assignments as well as being able to communicate with their teachers before they move in to middle school and hopefully this will help prepare them for next year.
Typing Agent
There is also a link to typing agent on the district website. Students all have a login and we encourage each student to spend a regular amount of time practicing as much as possible.
Math
This week students worked on multiplying and dividing integers and took an assessment. I also handed out login information for a website I use call Mangahigh.com. Students are encouraged to login at home and on nights we do not have homework, they can spend some time playing games or doing lessons. Next week, will be doing a quick application project and review our learning at the end of the unit.
Science
We finished looking at the water cycle and completed two conclusions about both the water cycle and a water cycle game. Both should be posted on schoolology as soon as I can grade them. We finally got our science kits and have begun to dig through them. Next week we will begin our investigation into erosion and getting our hands dirty with stream tables.
Volunteers
We are going to need chaperones and volunteers for events this year. Please get your paperwork in as soon as possible the deadline for this paperwork is October 15th and the district is not flexible about that date. If you would like to be one of the overnight chaperones for camp, that paperwork is a little different and need to be turned in as soon as possible. Forms are available in the office.  Remember to bring ID.  If you have a job or hobby that would be relevant to our in-class studies, then we’d love to have you.

Weekly Blogger Update

We've been learning about multiplying, and dividing integers in math. We just had our math test on integers today. We have finished growing our pea plants, so now we can take them home. In science we played a game about the water cycle, ask your student about it and they will tell you.  At art we have been making myths in the form of comics.

Bloggers Weekly Update

This week in  Mr. Hill's class, we planted our pea seeds. In math we have been learning about integers and absolute value. At recess, we  did  rotations with other 5th grade teachers to play games. We went to P.E. for the first time this school year. In P.E, we played Cat and Mouse. Not just that, but we also went to library too. Sadly though Ms. Miller, our librarian, is leaving because she's having her baby next week.

Weekly Update

Mr. Brown’s Class

In Mr. Brown’s class, we focused on our classroom charter, and began our first writing mini-project. The charter work engages students in defining the specific emotions they desire having in their classroom community, and challenges them to prescribe actions that will encourage those emotions. The class agreed on the words positive, safe, satisfied, challenged, and friendly. Additionally, students performed skits about addressing uncomfortable feelings and conflict, and determined a number of strategies to help resolve such episodes.

Mr. Hill’s Class

In Mr. Hill’s class we got right to work on our charter.  The words that we came up with for this year are Safe, Content, Included, Supported, Creative and Respected.  Ask your student how they plan to live the charter?  They come up with many “I Can” statements and I have posted them around the room.
Writing
For writing, students researched, drafted, and revised a Story of my Name. Students asked family members to tell them about their name, performed additional research about famous persons that share their namesake, and have woven tales or essays about some aspect of their name. I can’t wait to read their stories!
Looking ahead
In a couple of weeks, we will be reading The Giver by Lois Lowry, and I’m asking that families acquire a copy if at all possible. Please email me, ntbrown@seattleschools.org if that is
Math
This week students worked on integer computation. Next week we will start multiplication and division of integers. We will be doing a quick application project and review our learning at the end of the unit.
Science
We continued our investigation into the water cycle and the terrariums are starting to sprout. We also looked closely at the brain. Reading several articles about the function of several of the parts of the brain and how it effects our learning.

Camp Sealth

13 September 2016

Dear 5th Grade Families,
It’s time for Camp Sealth!
This year the 5th grade classroom pairs will go to Camp Sealth on Vashon Island for two nights and three days to build community and participate in outdoor, nature-based activities. The primary purpose for going to camp each Fall is to get to know each other, build relationships, and establish a community among classrooms and teachers. Each pair of teachers will attend together as follows:
Meyer/Toney Classes: Oct. 11th, 12th, and 13th
Savage/Underdahl: Oct. 26th, 27th, and 28th
Brown/Hill: Nov. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th
Each pair of classes will depart from Cascadia Elementary and travel by school buses to the Fauntleroy ferry terminal in West Seattle, cross the Sound, and continue on the buses directly to Camp Sealth. In past years, families have dropped off and picked up at the ferry terminals; but this year, we will travel by buses from school all the way to camp and back.

Drop Off/Pick Up
Families will drop off students, and their luggage, at Cascadia Elementary in the North Parking lot on their departure date. Families will pick up their child in the North Parking lot on their return date.
Departure Drop Off Time: 8:45 am (Buses will leave promptly at 9:00 am-we cannot wait for late arrivals)
Return Pick Up Time: 2:00 pm

Cost
The cost per student for the three days, two nights, bus and ferry travel is $125.00**
The cost for attending parent chaperones is $100.
**Scholarships available. Contact Beth Lee in the Cascadia Office brlee@seattleschools.org for more info.
Checks should be made out to Cascadia Elementary. Please write your child’s name and homeroom teacher in the memo section of your check.
Chaperones/Volunteers
We do need parent chaperones to make this exciting trip take place. If you are interested in becoming a parent chaperone, all volunteer and overnight chaperone paperwork must be complete and on file with SPS and Cascadia Elementary.
In addition to chaperones for the overnight camp, we would also like a few parent volunteers to help students and adults load on to and unload from the buses on drop off and pick up days.
Please contact your child’s homeroom teacher to volunteer for either position.
We look forward to this exciting opportunity for all students to join us on this very special trip!
We hope that you can make the Camp Sealth Parent Meeting Night this Thursday, September 15th, at 6:45 pm in the Cascadia Library.
Please direct specific questions to your homeroom teacher.
All the best,
The 5th Grade Team

Schoolology and other helpful district sites.

Here is a link to the district Student Portal. One of the links is Schoolology and has logins for both students and parents. I use this for my grade book, for assignments and other communications. This link is information on logging in and I will be teaching students how to log in, in the first few weeks. It is good for students to get used to checking grades and looking at assignments as well as being able to communicate with their teachers before the move in to middle school and hopefully this will help prepare them for next year.

I have been using it for the past year and there is a lot that I still have to learn about Schoolology, but I am hopeful that I can use it to post photos of classwork and maybe of camp to share with parents. Let me know if I can help in any way and I will do my best.

Welcome to 5th Grade at Cascadia Elementary

My name is Josh Hill and I teaching 5th grade math and science this year. My goal is to create an open conversation about your student’s education so please feel free to contact me with any questions related to school. My contact information is listed below and I prefer email and will try to get back to you as soon as possible. I do have email on my phone and if I have it available can reply after school hours.

I am one of two teachers that will be working as part of a team covering the academic subjects. Nathan Brown will be teaching the humanities and I will be teaching math and science. A short introductory  statement from Mr. Brown is below. We will also be complemented by a fantastic group of art, P.E. and music teachers

I am excited to be working with your child and I look forward to teaching math and science this year. Below is a link to the state websites that shows Washington State Standards. It has a lot of information and is searchable. In Science we are currently transitioning into the Next Generation Science Standards.

Dates to remember:
Meet the Teacher is Thursday, September 1st from 3:00-3:30 PM
Curriculum night September 29th at 6:00 PM
Camp Sealth November 2nd through the 4th

My room number is S306 and please stop by with your student tomorrow during meet the teacher.

Volunteers:

We are going to need chaperones and volunteers for events this year. Please get your paperwork in as soon as possible the deadline for this paperwork is October 15th and the district is not flexible about that date. If you would like to be one of the overnight chaperones for camp, that paperwork is a little different and need to be turned in as soon as possible. Forms will be available during Meet the Teacher, this Thursday. Volunteer Paperwork can be completed in the lunchroom from 1-3:30 p.m.  Remember to bring ID.  If you have a job or hobby that would be relevant to our in-class studies, then we’d love to have you.

School Supplies

We have purchased school supplies for each student, including a binder, planner, composition notebooks, eraser, pencils, pencil pouches, and paper. We are asking for $45 to pay for them and some of this money will go to support other activities such as art, p.e. and the iLab. We should have everything your student needs here, so the only things to think about for day one are below. For the rest of the year, if your student needs refills on things (for example pens or a replacement for things lost or broken) this will be your responsibility. Therefore, once your student is given supplies, it’s his or her responsibility to come prepared every day.

Every day your student needs:
  • Water bottle
  • Their binder with pens and pencils (homework inside)
  • Book to read
  • Healthy Snack

My background is in business and design so I hope to bring real world situations to every class period. I feel this helps students to make connections to their future. I have my masters in teaching from Willamette University in Oregon and am licensed to teach, elementary education and both math and science at the middle school level. I spend much of my off time with my family but do enjoy traveling and seeing the world. Last year I became Dive Certified and look forward to exploring the world’s water.

Please check out my blog regularly for classroom updates, student work and current events. The address is http://rooms306.blogspot.com. Not only do I post weekly but have sections with resources you can use to support learning. Thank you for this opportunity to work with your child and I look forward to hearing from you.

Nathan Brown:
I am excited to join team Dragon, to meet all of you, and to collaborate with the teachers here at Cascadia. I am stoked to teach humanities this year, as I am very passionate about creativity and the mediums we use to communicate. Outside of teaching, I play Ultimate Frisbee, spend time with my girlfriend and her 8-year-old son, read, and sip on delicious cups of coffee. I also dabble in photography, filmmaking, drawing, and writing when inspired. Please feel free to get in touch with me using the contact information below. I can’t wait to get the year started!
