Field Trips

We finally have the amount that each student will be asked to pay for the three field trips this year. It is $275 per student. I am also excited to announce that the Seattle School District will take an online payment for it. They now have a link through the source for most payments.

This link is a FAQ for how to make payments once you are logged into the Source. https://www.seattleschools.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=627&pageId=58439596
I am sorry that the timing of this is so close to the holiday so feel free to wait until January to pay if it is inconvenient.  We also offer scholarships if this amount is difficult. You just have to email Laura at lremme@seattleschools.org.

Field Trips:
  • Living Computer Museum on January 11th and I have already sent out the permission slips. Please make sure it is returned ASAP!
  • The next one will be the Pacific Marine Research Vessel on March 21st. This one will have special instruction for transportation so keep a look out for those.
  • Camp Sealth will be June 4th through the 7th.

thank you so much for your support in making these happen.

Josh and Nathan

P.S. We are still in need of chaperones for the Living Computer Museum on January 11th. If you have your paperwork turned in and are ready to go, please let us know.

Red dates are corrections from the email that was sent out.

Weekly Update 12/19/18

This week has been a good one in the Brown/ Hill classroom. For math, we are learning about area and perimeter. In science we are working on our molecular models (due on the 21st). We are also doing a vlog about the book we are reading in class. (the True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle) On Friday, we will also have our holiday party.

In Charlotte Doyle we have been finishing up on our reading responses on part one. In part one Charlotte is a girl who lives on a ship. At first Charlotte liked the captain on the ship but then she realized what he was doing to the crew. Charlotte made good friends with the crew members and the captain wasn’t treating them respectfully. One day Charlotte found a pistol and she went to the captain and when she wanted to show the captain, the pistol was gone. Then the captain started killing the crew with guns and he was also whipping them and Charlotte didn’t like that so she whipped the captain. After that, the crew had to work full time because they had less members. Later Charlotte found out the pistol was part of their plan to get their revenge on the captain. Charlotte was sorry she messed up their plan so we will be writing or vloging a letter to the crew that we will write for Charlotte. The letter will be apologizing to the crew and will tell what Charlotte will do for the crew.

Weekly Update 12/12/18

In language arts, students are editing their novels and making cover pages. Students will be celebrating their writing and hard work on Friday. We are combing with all the other 5th grade classes, who have written poetry anthologies, and having a cozy afternoon of novel and poetry reading. We invite students to wear their pajamas, as well as bring in one stuffy that fits in their backpacks. Additionally, if any parents are able and willing to help out with crockpots, cider, and decorations, please email us!

They have also been reading Charlotte Doyle as a class and should be caught up through chapter 8.

In science this week, we are wrapping up the food science unit where we look at modeling things to small to see. The end of which is a molecular model that is due Friday the 21st. Students will also be writing a scientific explanation of how chromatography works. We made models of this as well and we used those models to describe how molecules could be separated using their properties.

In math this week, we looked at proportional relationships and how they look in equations (y=kx), how they look in tables (have a constant rate) and how they look on graphs (straight line and go through 0,0). Next week will be the chapter assessment on Thursday and we will be doing some review early next week.

Have a great week.

Weekly Update 11/28/18

This month we have been  really busy in language arts be cause we are taking on the challenge of nanowrimo (or national novel writing month). Basically we have the whole month of November to wright a rough draft of a story. everyone has a word count goal and they try to achieve it by the end of the month. the story has to have a plot, this consists of the set up, the inciting incident, the rising action, the climax, the falling action, and the resolution. my story is about aliens taking over earth and a team of survivors sent on a mission to kill the alien queen. here is a sample of it:

"     You may be wondering why a 12-year-old girl such as myself knows all these things that normally would have been confined to government officials, the answer to that question is the fact that most people in the government; if not all, didn’t approve of having 2 12-year-olds knowing about secret, … government secrets? I learned this by listening to a conversation between the president of the shelter, president Camel, and the vice president, vice president Smith, from behind a library cart at the training center library their conversation went like this:
“hello Jean!” exclaimed president camel, excited to see that ‘jean’ had made it to the shelter.
“hello president,” vice president Smith (who I’m going to call Smithy) remarked, in a rather dull manner “I am here to inform you that I and the council members believe that the girl and her brother are to be treated with the same respect as soldiers, not government operatives!” and then she stormed off.
Now let’s talk about the shelter itself, the shelter is one giant cavern I have a picture to put the size into perspective: "

                                Language Arts by Zara
The fight continues for NaNoWriMo as time is running out! Students are typing up a storm, but remember to make it interesting, and don’t get your brain clogged up with ideas!
Also, on the topic of language arts, in Mr. Brown’s class, we are reading a book called The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle.  It is a historical fiction set in the 1840’s about a 13-year-old girl named Charlotte Doyle who goes aboard a ship called The Seahawk on an adventure to America. Alone, except for the crew of course. We are in the middle of it right now.

                                        Social Studies by Zara
In this unit in social studies, we are learning about the event called The Terrible Transformation, where black slaves get treated worse and worse. First, a law was passed to say that Christians could not be slaves. Then, white people couldn’t be slaves. They just shipped African slaves here, there, everywhere, as Europeans moved into America. An African-American man named Antonio (later named Anthony Johnson) got his own farm and land, then moved to Maryland, died, and got his farm in Virginia taken by the government. Things eventually got so bad, slaves were treated like real estate! So, this is the end of my blog—for now. Keep writing and studying!

Math by Georgia

This week in math we talked about proportional relationships! A proportion relationship is a relationship between two numbers with another form of math. They also are equivalent ratios! We also have been working on ratios and all their glory. We have learned many important facts such as, it doesn’t matter which number is on top or bottom in a ratio, and that a ratio is used when the signer doesn’t have time to convert the fraction or decimal!

Science by Georgia

This week in science we ending a big project called The Scientific Method. This project was about water in is universe. You can do any power point related to water. But don’t hold your breath, because this week we’ve started a new project. It’s called The Molecular Molecule Project. During this project we must do a model (2d or 3d, you can even do it in a game!) of a molecule of an object in the real world. This project is due the day before Christmas break, so get to it!

weekly update 11/14/18

Us fancy bananas were busy at work this three day weekend this is what we did, Jacob played D.N.D (Dungeons And Dragons). Lorelei went to the book store and bought a ton of books, about ten!
Ruby watched the football game with a bunch of friends go Seahawks!  So as you can see we had tons of fun but there is another super duper fun thing happening, birthdays! We have  had 9 just this month so happy birthday to all of our birthday friends.  By Paige

Math
This week in Math, we have been focusing in on unit rates. A unit rate is a comparison of two quantities by division (with a denominator of 1). We also have been working with calculators, and I think I speak for everyone when I say we enjoy working with these materials! Along with these helpful objects in math, we also have homework! This helps us gain skills with the current materials!  By Georgia
Science
In science this week, we learned about matter and carbon and oxygen connections. We also discussed how important models are! We started learning about atoms and molecules and even food science! Food science is the study of food. Chefs, bakers, chemists, and even just a home cook can be a food scientist! By Georgia
Language Arts
We have gone farther into the magical world of writing in NaNoWriMo, a.k.a. National Novel Writing Month, of November 2018! The clock is ticking, with only about half of the month left to go! Now, a little pep talk for all you future novelists. Writing 10,000 words may suck, but if you believe in yourself, and push out a lot of your free time, YOU CAN DO IT!!!! Also, the saving on Word is murder, so use Word Online. (It’ll save you a lot of stress) Work on weekends, and even after school! So, come on writers, let’s be joyful, creative, pleasant, and especially motivated! (This applies mostly to the Orcas)  By Zara

Social Studies
This unit in social studies has been a trip learning about the nasty and gruesome things done to the natives of the Americas, and later Africans and non-whites. On the 13th of November we watched a video entitled “Africans in America: Episode 1 The Terrible Transformation”. In that video we learned about slavery after the Indians; such as people being forced to work on plantations for 7-10 years, and that was only for Christians. By Finley

Weekly Update 11/7/18

in Mr. Hill's class this week we have done multiple things, we had a wonderful Halloween party you can log on to class dojo to  see some of the  pictures. at the party there was karaoke and jar making not to mention  the fun games and the watching of the TV show "the worst witch" there was lots of nutritious Halloween snacks, the fun never stopped at this Halloween party.

As fifth graders we get the opportunities to make expectation videos!  now, you may be asking what theses are so I am going to tell you. what these are, are little shorts that are played at community meetings. they show you what to do and what not to do.

now lets talk about student council, we have recently split in to four groups/committees, the kindness committee, the spirit committee, the community meeting committee, and last but certainly not least community service committee. the kindness committee  is a group of people that walks around and makes sure everyone is being kind. the spirit comity is a group of people who makes sure everyone has schools spirit an they make all the school spirit days happen. the community meeting committee organizes all the community meetings, and the community service committee cleans up our school and makes it look so clean it sparkles!  this has been the blog.

This week in Math, we had a math test and we started a fantastic new unit! What a busy week! We have been working on integers in math class recently. Now that were done with the unit, we took a test! On this test we had to: add, subtract, multiply, and divide! That’s a lot! After completing the test, we got calculators. What a relief! We also started a new unit about rates and ratios. Now, were learning non-stop and having so much fun! Math is awesome!

This week in science, we started a new unit, we ended an old unit, and we even got the privilege to work with are amazing student teacher! Are old unit was the water cycle and water molecules. Did you know that they can be on land or in water? Now, were learning about matter. Matter makes up are planet and 5% of the universe! It's very important! Mr. Kinser, are fabulous student teacher, has been teaching us about rain shadow, and how to help East Ferris Island!(this is a problem we have been figuring out for 3 months!) Thanks so much Mr. Kinser!
By Georgia

This week in reading and writing with Mr. Brown, we have been working on lot’s of great material, like NaNoWriMo. NaNoWriMo is an interactive writing program, and the goal? To write a novel over the month of November! Each student has a personal word goal that they try to achieve, it’s so much fun! We’ve been working on dialogue lately, and students have made lots of progress on their novels! We can’t wait to see how they turn out! Here’s the link for the NaNoWriMo: https://ywp.nanowrimo.org/

Social studies, is lot’s of fun! We read lot’s of articles on pros and cons for Columbus Day and took a writing assessment. We’ve also been watching a movie on the Americas before Columbus! We have learned so much!

Weekly Update 10/31/18

What a great week!

In math we finished up with rational numbers and students will be taking their assessment tomorrow. We worked on the 4-step process for solving problems and it should be very useful for ensuring mastery on any assessment. Several things were assigned in Pearson but will not be counted towards grade, but just used to review for the assessment. If you want to take a look at them, you can log into Pearson Realize.

I also found a great resource for homework. Bounce Pages is the name of an app you can download on your phone and students can use it to scan work and get video help.

In science we are winding up with the Ferris Island problem. Students have learned what a rain shadow is and will be writing a Scientific Explanation of why East Ferris gets less rain than West Ferris. We also designed systems for distilling freshwater from saltwater. We look forward to seeing how they work.

In language arts, students started brain storming ideas for NaNoWriMo. Ask your student what their next novel will be.

For social studies, students are doing a study of the question; should Washington change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day? Ask your student what they think and why. Also make sure they cite their sources.

Lastly, we had a great holiday party today. Students had a very good time with their 5th grade friends in the other hall. Karaoke, movies, games and crafts. Fun for all and thank you so much to those that volunteered to help out. It made a world of difference.
